I have probably said it to thousands of people, not the world’s most eloquent, but more simply, “digital marketing isn’t a sustainable practice for the future; it’s an outdated, over-copied practice”.

But honestly? I’ve lived and worked in marketing as far back as I can remember. Before I began to get the feeling that digital marketing is doomed, I was reading bits and pieces of marketing content here and there, often just about to get pushed down my throat.

But I wasn’t in a place that allowed me to expose myself to what digital marketing should and should not be.

That probably sounds odd to you, but in essence, marketing is about creating your brand to a stranger who is far away from who you are as a person and company.

For someone of a smaller mind frame, they might believe that the campaign will fail. They might believe that in the world of marketing, there is no way to make money because the internet or technology is so interwoven into our everyday lives.

And because they don’t know anything about marketing, they can’t see that marketing is a practice that exists today in the same margins of an industry that didn’t exist yet.

And so the question that the day after I said this is, what is digital marketing?

And that is the weird thing about the world of marketing. How can someone so far removed from your industry have a clear understanding of your industry?

Remember when I said marketing is the oldest profession of all? Well, marketers spend an immense amount of their time in other industries that marketers need to have some understanding of in order to have an understanding of what marketing really is.

To get people to understand the real essence of marketing, we first need to let the world know what marketing is.

Digital marketing is marketing. It is doing something good for somebody else.

Remembering why marketing started in the first place is often forgotten.

Marketing is something we all do, even in the smallest town or business.

And even when we think about being far away from the role that marketing has taken for itself, the people within marketing are more than happy to give it to us.

Marketing isn’t a complicated practice. But we just expect marketing to be complex.

Is branding a complicated process, too? Yes, it’s a complex process.

But here’s what marketers do for their clients.

They brand them for them and call them out whenever they are doing something good. They represent them to the world.

In the way that we as marketers represent our customers.

Branding is marketing. It’s branding your brand to someone else.

Branding involves creating a product that’s beneficial and selling it to them. And selling it to them is doing a good thing.

So we still need to be marketers, at least in theory. However, the question we need to ask is…

What is digital marketing?

Is it a simple practice?

Is it a complicated practice?

Is marketing needed, or is marketing obsolete?

Even though I have read a lot of marketing content recently, I can’t see much point in writing marketing pieces on Medium when we know so little about digital marketing.

So for those of you reading this article: if you are convinced that digital marketing is dead?

If so, maybe you should consider what will happen to your customer relationships, your brand’s brand image, and your research’s findings if you wish to continue on the traditional marketing strategies that haven’t changed much in the past fifty years?

“Digital marketing is the future of marketing. It will make marketing powerful and effective.”

This is the reason why digital marketing has taken over the market today.

But if you think your market share is starting to shrink, you need to become digital marketing savvy and not be turned off by the latest trends.

It is imperative that you know more about digital marketing, how the internet was making use of it, and how marketing studies have deemed the right approach to the future of marketing.

This guide is a short overview of how digital marketing really works, why marketers would love it, and why it has grown in the last few years. And while you read, take some time to understand and consider how digital marketing might affect your marketing strategy in the future.
